As the nation commemorates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, this Educator Institute invites educators to explore how the ideals declared in 1776 have shaped our constitutional story. Participants will investigate the Declaration as both a founding document and one that has continued to inspire generations of Americans striving to expand the promise of liberty and equality. Throughout the week, teachers will engage with the National Constitution Center’s new Interactive Declaration of Independence, dive into rich primary sources, and participate in scholar-led conversations that uncover how the language of 1776 has been interpreted and invoked across history. They will also get to explore the NCC’s exhibit spaces, including two new exhibits on America’s founding and on the separation of powers and federalism. Educators will leave with classroom-ready materials and strategies to help students connect the Declaration’s enduring promises to pivotal constitutional events throughout history and meet the current civic moment. This institute is designed for educators teaching grades 5-12 and runs from 4 p.m. on Sunday through noon on Friday. Some meals will be provided, and a stipend will be available to help offset travel and lodging costs. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled sessions and complete a final classroom project as part of the Institute experience. Please review the NCC’s Guide to Educator Institutes for full details before applying.
