2026-02-08📍 Center City EastFilmmaker Talk: Don & Moki: Organic Music Society, with Ephraim Asili and Louis Massiah
This Black History Month, get a sneak peek into a film-in-progress by Philadelphia native Ephraim Asili exploring the shared artistic, political, and spiritual worlds that shaped the work of multi-instrumentalist Don Cherry and his collaborator and wife, the artist Moki Cherry. Brought together on Moki’s birthday, Asili joins Scribe Video Center founder Louis Massiah for a conversation anchored in Asili’s ongoing work,Don & Moki: Organic Music Society. This feature-length 16mm documentary/essay film draws from rare archival materials, filmed performances, and newly shot footage and interviews with the couple’s many collaborators. An excerpt from this work is currently on view inThe Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry. Together, they will reflect on filmmaking as a mode of research, listening, and collective memory, and on the challenges of translating improvisational, interdisciplinary practices to the screen.

Join us for an exclusive member hour ofThreaded Currents.FWM and PAFA Members are invited to a special morning preview, enjoying early access to the exhibition and PAFA’s galleries before the museum opens to the public. Exhibition curators Sarah Lewis and Greg Martino will be onsite to engage with members. Threaded Currentsbrings together the work of recent apprentices from The Fabric Workshop and Museum who are also alumni or current students of thePennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). This exhibition explores the dynamic crosscurrents between traditional fine arts training and contemporary, experimental materials-based practices fostered at FWM.

Friday nights at 7:30pm, Playtime Comedy takes over Philly Typewriter for a BYOB standup show on East Passyunk. The shop—co-owned by Bryan Kravitz and Bill Rhoda—houses over 1,300 vintage typewriters, including one autographed by Tom Hanks according to Atlas Obscura. Broad Street Review describes the space as having exposed brick walls and beautiful wooden floors in what was originally a synagogue. $15 online, $20 at the door (cash, Venmo, or CashApp). Monthly passes available.

Friday nights at 9pm, a three-piece band backs you up as you belt out whatever's in the songbook—no backing tracks, just live guitar, bass, and drums plus a harmonizing host. The Independent Review Crew described singers who "transformed into a Chris Stapleton-singing Lucinda Williams" on stage. The upstairs room at this Center City Irish pub has hosted the night since 1994. No cover.
