Teacher Workshop | Finding the Soul of History through the Art of Jerry Pinkney
Location: Charles Knox Smith Hall @ Woodmere, 9201 Germantown Avenue Provides PA 3 Act 48 Hours Explore how the art of Jerry Pinkney can inspire students to connect with the stories and soul of history. Through his powerful watercolor illustrations, Pinkney reveals not only the events of history but also the personal and cultural stories behind them. Celebrated for transforming children’s literature by centering Black histories, Pinkney invites us to see ourselves within the stories we teach. Discover fresh ways to spark your students’ curiosity and critical thinking through art that deepens an understanding of historical events, African American cultural contributions, and the human experiences that connect us all. The workshop will focus on Pinkney’s illustrations for A Place To Land: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Speech That Inspired A Nation, the story of Dr. King’s legendary speech for the 1963 March on Washington; and God Bless the Child, imagined by Pinkney as a story of the Great Migration. Teaching materials will be available for classroom use. A follow up workshop, Discovering the Soul of Storytelling through the Art of Jerry Pinkney, will be offered on Sat., Jan. 24, 2026. $20/teacher
