Fire Museum Presents 25th Anniversary: Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury & Naren Budhakar Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury: Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury is an exponent of the Rampur Senia Gharana in the venerated lineage of, Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury and Pandit Subroto Roy Chowdhury. Primarily trained in the Veen-Kar style of Sitar which draws techniques and idioms of the Veena, Indrajit has been able to carve a niche for himself with his eclecticism and versatility. Indrajit strives for a fine balance of traditionalism coupled with innovation. Indrajit is based out of New York and maintains a rigorous tour schedule across the continents. As an international artist, Indrajit has performed in a range of distinguished venues, notably: Dover Lane Music Conference, Kolkata, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, The Lincoln Center, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Toronto National Convention Center, Berlin Indian Embassy, Concordia Arts Poznan, Poland, Chayanaut Auditorium, Dhaka and Ramakrishna Mission Cultural Centre, Kolkata. Naren Budhakar : Born into the music tradition of India, Naren Budhakar began performing at a young age. A disciple of Tabla Maestro Ustad Shabbir Nisar, Naren has played with prominent instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers including Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj and Shaed Parvez and has performed at prestigious venues in the U.S. and Europe. He has provided Tabla accompaniment for various musical genres and has played with La Monte Young and Bobby Mc Ferrin and recorded with Alicia Keys. Naren is co-director of the East-West School of Music and as a faculty member teaches and performs regularly. Fire Museum Presents turns 25 today! Our first ever event took place on January 20th, 2001 in Berkeley, Ca. To celebrate we are hosting three events with series favorites, first up is this evening of Hindustani music & Kuchipudi dance. We cherish our long standing collaboration with The Rotunda and are glad to be hosting two of the events here! Admission is FREE. Donations are appreciated. Addtional Images

There will be additional singings on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday evenings, elsewhere. The convention singing starts at 10:00 AM both Saturday and Sunday, with registration at 9:30. It runs until around 3:30 PM with a break for dinner around 12:30. Please bring a dish to share if you are able. There are no kitchen facilities, but crockpots are welcome. University of Pennsylvania African American Resource Center presents The Orator: Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Orator is a true story, highlighting the journeyof K Rose, a gifted child orator, growing up in the city of Philadelphia underthe influence and tutelage of her mother. While her home life shaped heroratorical gift, the Black Baptist church provided the stage for her oratorical gift to be nurtured. Taking notice of the young girl’s oratorical gift, whenshe spoke on youth day at the Historical St. Paul’s Baptist church in NorthPhiladelphia, was Dr. William Cousins, an optometrist, civic leader and member of the civic group, Philadelphia Frontiers. Dr. Cousins makes a very unusual request to K. Rose at the age of thirteen, to learn the I Have a Dream speech, by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King jr. Performed as a one-women show, the performance, highlights the history of the African American family and community. Admission is FREE
