25th Anniversary: Iva Bittová & Antonin Fajt duo + The Other Side of a Dream
Iva Bittová
:
Hailing from the present-day Czech Republic, Iva Bittová is one of Europe's most innovative and celebrated artists. She began her career as an actor in the mid-1970s, appearing in several Czech and Slovak feature films. Born to famed Roma violinist Bittó Kálmán, she was playing violin and singing at a very early age. In 1987 Iva & percussionist Pavel Fajt released an album of original minimalist fusion of alternative rock music with Slavic and Roma motifs. Iva Bittova's first solo record ("Iva Bittova" - 1991) fully outlined her extraordinary complexity as an artist. She composed all of the 14 tracks on the album, except for Czech folk song "One Sister".
Bittova is one of those rare artists who know how to put all possible extremes of the emotional scale into one song: she laughs and cries, cackles as a hen, chirps as a bird, slaps her tongue, makes strange throat noises. Bittova's violin playing is as impressive as her vocal acrobatics, distilled from different techniques, constantly mixed. She might pluck her instrument as a ukulele or a banjo,or play with a bow or a wooden stick to get a rhythmical pattern from the string. Bittova uses everything she has, plays with her entire body, beats a rhythm with her feet.
In addition to her solo concerts Bittova has collaborated and performed with Jiri Stivin, Emil Viklicky, Fred Frith, Tom Cora, Chris Cutler, David Moss, Pavel Fajt and many others.
Antonin Fajt
:
Antonin Fajt's music combines elements of folkloric traditions of Eastern Europe, jazz and classical composition. Toni grew up in Lelekovice, in the Moravian region of Czech Republic in a musical family. His mother, Iva Bittová is a singer, violinist and composer, and his father, Pavel Fajt is a drummer and composer. Antonín moved to the Hudson Valley, NY in 2007. He likes to work with preparations, folk materials, sampling, texture, and repetition. Toni holds a BA in music from Bard College ’14, where he studied under the mentorship of the composer Joan Tower.
Besides music, he likes to cook, work outside, make events, and pretend to know things. He's been fortunate to work with wonderful musicians such as Dean Sharp, Niloufar Shiri, Window Quartet, Andrei Kvapil, Henry Birdsey, George Mráz, Jessika Kenney, Eyvind Kang, Michael Dessen, PUBLIQuartet, & the ICE ensemble. He can be heard with his group Mantis with Niloufar Shiri, in duo with Iva Bittová, or in improvised music scenes in New York and southern California. He holds an MA from the Integrative Composition, Improvisation and Technology program at UC Irvine where he is currently finishing his PhD dissertation and composing a larger musical work centered around the Hudson River and its two-way flow as a representation of time.
The Other Side Of A Dream
:
Outsider jazz ensemble The Other Side Of A Dream was formed in 2021 by Jordan Burgis (Systolic Murmurs) as a pedal steel and analog synthesizer trio. After a few years of experimenting and recording at home, the project was resurrected in 2025 with a new focus on electro-acoustic piano improvisations. With fellow dreamers Darian Scatton (Song People) on analog synths and Mary Beth Ray (MB + MP) on processed electric guitars, the trio’s atmospheric music explores the space between daydreams and ecstatic visions, always posing the question: “Who will I be on the other side of a dream?”
Fire Museum Presents turns 25! Our first ever event took place on January 20th, 2001 in Berkeley, Ca. To celebrate we are hosting three events with series favorites, tonight with Iva Bittová in duo with Antonin Fajt and the exploratory sounds of The Other Side Of A Dream.
We cherish our long standing collaboration with
The Rotunda
and are glad to be hosting two of the events here!
Admission is FREE, donations are appreciated!

Classical Saturday | Marja Kaisla and the Trio Excelsior!
Pianist Marja Kaisla returns to Woodmere with the Trio Excelsior! They will perform three exciting piano trios spanning nearly 200 years of musical innovation including: Beethoven's expansive masterpiece the Archduke Trio; Enrique Granados's Trio, representing a kaleidoscope of gorgeous themes in late romantic European style and Spanish dance; and the insane but super fun rollercoaster ride by Paul Schoenfield, Café Music, in which the composer combines jazz, folk, gypsy, Dixieland, ragtime and modern writing with highest virtuosic demands for all three instruments. Admiration for each other's musicianship and great friendship inspired Marja Kaisla, Elina Snellman-Lang, and Yevgeniy Dyo to form Trio Excelsior! Beyond the sheer joy of playing together, they use the rich and intimate piano trio repertoire to further explore their connection to music and one another. Trio Excelsior! brings this shared experience to audiences of all ages, offering a unique window into the lives of great composers and the ways in which they expressed the essence of human existence through their music. Paige Donovan -
Website
Over the past ten years, Donovan has developed an original approach to painting and drawing involving intricately textured marks. Largely focused on landscapes taken both from source imagery and her imagination, Donovan develops a sense of space and distance in her compositions through a dense accrual of small shapes. Her vocabulary of mark comes from a desire to invent new and different ways of manipulating her materials – from crow-quill pen and calligraphy ink to acrylic paint – as well as an almost meditative approach to her art practice, which she continues to hone and develop every day.
Mary T Bevlock -
Website
My inspiration comes from books, shapes, my religion, and celebrities. My favorite material is colored pencils because none of the colors are alike, it feels like butter, with brighter colors. I like to blend because I get more colors that way. It feels great, wonderful, to make artwork, warm and happy feelings. So… magic. Magical. I like response to my paintings, from anybody, that feels really good. “

The first half features miniatures by Wiancko and Bartók culminating in the turbulent and emotionally charged Mozart Piano Quartet in G Minor. The Little-Screened 1973 Epic!
FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY (1973, directed by Jack Smight, 182 minutes, U.S./U.K.)
- - - -
One of the most thought-provoking takes on Mary Shelley's timeless novel, 1973's FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY was originally conceived as a lavish all-star network TV event, running over two consecutive nights on NBC. Starring Leonard Whiting as Victor Frankenstein (Zeffirelli's “Romeo”) and handsome big-screen lead Michael Sarrazin as The Monster, this telling of the classic tale honors many of the main themes of the novel (it is the first to include Shelley's arctic finale) while incorporating ideas from both the Universal and Hammer Studios versions.
But the film's most-distinctive element is its script by the gay literary figure Christopher Isherwood and his partner, artist Don Bachardy. Isherwood is most famous for his 1939 autobiographical novel Goodbye to Berlin, the basis of the musical CABARET. Isherwood & Bachardy's lively and inventive rendition lends to the queerest of readings, with Victor lavishing love and instruction to Sarrazin's beautiful childlike creature, only to turn his back when the Monster's beauty begins to decay. Victor may want to forget the Monster and return to society with his bride but the decaying creature continues to haunt Victor like a guilty conscience.
Shot in England, the cast is loaded with celebrated actors, including James Mason as the nefarious Dr. Polidori, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'s David McCallum is Victor's twisted mentor, Jane Seymour (fresh from the Bond film LIVE AND LET DIE) is the feral Monster's Bride, and Agnes Moorhead, Tom “Dr. Who” Baker and Sirs Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud filling out the impressive cast.
FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY creates an impressive sense of scale for the modern fable, with Victor's solar-fueled laboratory being particularly impressive (production design by Wilfrid Shingleton, of Polanski's MACBETH). Decades later, it is still among the vivid tellings of Shelley's classic, Bright Bulb is pleased to give this memorable production a rare theatrical screening.
“The True Story captures more of her contemplative, lyrical perspective than nearly any other Frankenstein adaptation.”

A Conversation with Peter Paone: Snowpeople and Beyond
With artist Peter Paone and Woodmere's associate curator, Amy Gillette "As a child, snowmen were not part of my life," Peter Paone writes. "I grew up in the narrow streets of South Philadelphia, with shoveled sidewalks. The thirty gouaches in this exhibition are my effort to give birth to what never was." The artist calls this series Snowpeople. He remarks, "The snowpeople are a community—they represent what you’ll find in any crowd. They express melancholy, joy, humor." As such, they witness Paone's career-long passion for representing the human condition. Join us for a conversation between Paone and Amy Gillette, Woodmere's associate curator. They will explore the Snowpeople exhibition as well as his other works on display at Frances M. Maguire Hall—including his Carnaby Street miniatures, created in London during the peak of the 1960s social revolution. Peter Paone was born and raised in South Philadelphia, in a first-generation Italian-American home. He has been a leader in the Philadelphia arts community as an artist, collector, and teacher for over seven decades. In the 1950s, Paone studied at the Barnes Foundation and earned a degree in art education at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (later the University of the Arts). His work has been exhibited at institutions across the United States and internationally, and he has held faculty positions at both the Pratt Institute and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), where he established and chaired the printmaking department. Paone has stated, “I’m interested in a universal human condition—stories that are continuing and repeating in a positive way and a haunted way.” Following the talk, Peter Paone will be available to sign exhibition catalogues, which can be purchased at the front desk of Maguire Hall. $15 (FREE Woodmere Members)

Tri-Axium Theory and You- Unlocking the Music of Anthony Braxton
12:00 PM
Led by Erica Dicker, This workshop is dedicated to the exploration of the compositional/improvisational systems of Anthony Braxton.
Led by tri-centric orchestra concertmaster Erica Dicker, This workshop is dedicated to the exploration of the compositional/improvisational systems of NEA Jazz Master Anthony Braxton. As much as we are trying to faithfully approach the work of the maestro, we will use this music as a springboard to unlocking our own creativity and unique approaches.
In the course of these 3 hours- participants will learn how to spontaneously arrange music utilize Braxton’s Language Music, and have the opportunity to ask burning questions about score interpretation. The last half of the workshop will be dedicated to practicing the scores as a collective ensemble. For those up for the adventure, they will then perform the scores in the concert to follow in the evening. This workshop is open to all instrumentalists, composers, and “friendly experiencers.” The ability to play notated music is useful but not necessary for the enjoyment of the workshop. Instrumentalists in the workshop are required to bring their own amplification to play in the concert. There will not be use of the PA. Vocalists should bring their own mic and make arrangements prior to the workshop.
Tickets are sliding scale $20-30, $30 Day of Show.
Bios
Violinist Erica Dicker works in a wide variety of musical settings, bridging the realms of notated and improvised music. Erica lends her creative voice to the Brandon Seabrook String Society, Blood Luxury, and her electro-acoustic trio Vaster Than Empires. Taking Auspices (Tubapede Records), her “knockout solo debut,” [Bandcamp Daily] features her own solo compositions for violin that explore extended techniques and alternate tunings, yielding music both familiar and strange. Erica is a founding member of the horn-trio Kylwyria. With hornist John Gattis and pianist Mabel Kwan, Kylwyria commissions adventurous chamber music for this unique instrumentation, enabling luminaries such as Eric Wubbels and Katherine Young to make invaluable contributions to the repertoire.
Erica is, perhaps, best known for her work with composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton as a performer and collaborator as well as an educational ambassador for Braxton’s non-profit Tri-Centric Foundation. Erica writes about and curates performances of Braxton’s work, most recently coaching members of Tactus (Manhattan School of Music) in performance practice and lecturing on analytical approaches to Braxton’s music at Columbia University. Additionally, Erica has toured with Braxton internationally, appearing at festivals such as Berlin Jazz Festival, Jazz Middelheim Festival (Belgium), Jantar Festival (Poland), Akbank Festivali (Turkey), Skopje Jazz Festival (Macedonia), the Venice Biennale, and Warsaw Autumn Festival. Praised for her rich sound and stylistic versatility, Erica is an invaluable recording artist and colleague. With pianist Karl Larson, Erica performed Morton Feldman’s epic, 80-minute for John Cage at the Jewish Museum in 2022 and had the honor of performing Braxton’s Composition No. 222 with pianist Cory Smythe at the Library of Congress in March of 2025. Notable releases on which she is featured include David Lang’s opera Anatomy Theater (Cantaloupe Music), Durand Jones and the Indications’ Private Space (Dead Oceans). Recent recordings include Contemporary Chaos Practices (Intakt Records) by Ingrid Laubrock, Concrete & Void (New Focus Recordings) with Wavefield Ensemble, Anna Webber’s Idiom (Pi Recordings), and Modney’s Ascending Primes (Pyroclastic Records). As an orchestral performer, Erica served as associate concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony, held section positions in regional orchestras in the Midwestern United States, Germany, and continues to perform with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the New York City Ballet Orchestra. Erica also enjoys her role as an instructor at Lehigh University and member of the Frequency String Quartet - the faculty chamber ensemble there. A proponent of new music, Erica collaborates with nascent composers of all ages and particularly enjoys her roles as artist in residence at the Walden School Young Musicians Program and Mostly Modern Festival. She holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the University of Minnesota and her doctoral degree from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. In-person! Vibrational Family- Braxton Composition 76 (For Trio)/Tri-Axium Workshop Performance
