The Best of Philly City Government

Media coverage, City programs, and resources you should know about.

Media Coverage

City government coverage is dominated by The Philadelphia Inquirer. Like, if you were to lay all coverage out as one really big pie, The Inquirer's slice is hella big. The Philadelphia Citizen and Billy Penn are popular blogs.

Council can be followed with an Inquirer subscription and by watching the hearings posted to their YouTube channel, although the Inky usually summarizes important hearings before they're posted. Budget hearings are lengthier and the best look into how our current Councilmembers think and what they prioritize.

We created a feed for important City Reports because they're dense with insights and....important.

There aren't enough podcasts covering the city's issues, but there are a few active ones. Podcast Specials (basically one-season deep-dive types) are excellent and there are ~half-dozen on issues ranging from gun violence to education to the Philly Fighting COVID debacle.

We have a few YouTube channels covering local politics. The City Council channel with its hearings is the most active.

City Web Apps are mostly dashboards displaying data on streets and properties.

If you want to be totally in the loop on the 2023 Mayor's race, follow these.

Corruption is a popular topic. We collected some convictions and wiretaps to give you an idea of what corruption looks like in a city.

City Programs

City Offices - who's responsible for what around here?

We rounded up the programs available from the city, mostly related to financial assistance, rental assistance, and environmental care.

City Resources are basically items that..well it's just stuff I think you should be aware of. Very similar to the City Programs feed.
