Every Sunday from 1–3:30 p.m., swing dancers take over a corner of Rittenhouse Square for Philadelphia's free outdoor Lindy Hop social dance. Rittenhop has been running for over a decade, keeping alive a quintessentially American dance that originated in Harlem's African American communities during the late 1920s—some say the name honored Charles Lindbergh's famous "hop" across the Atlantic in 1927. No experience or partner needed; beginners can try formal lessons Thursday nights at Jazz Attack across the street at the Ethical Society. Rittenhop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit; donations help bring live music and keep the weekly dance free for all.
